Dyson DC14 Parts: Filters, Hoses, Belts and Brushrolls
The Dyson DC14 is one of the most repaired uprights still in circulation. It was built to last, and most DC14 problems come down to a small set of wear parts: filters that need replacing, a hose that has cracked, a belt that has snapped, or a brushroll that has worn flat. This guide covers every part that commonly fails on the DC14, with specific part numbers for the Animal, All Floors, and Low Reach variants.
DC14 Variants: What You Need to Know First
The DC14 came in several configurations. Most parts are shared across variants, but the hose and some attachments differ:
| Variant | Key difference | Hose part |
|---|---|---|
| DC14 All Floors | Standard brushroll, no tangle-free turbine | 908474-28 |
| DC14 Animal | Tangle-free turbine tool included | 908474-28 |
| DC14 Low Reach | Angled wand for under-furniture reach | 908474-28 |
| DC14 Full Kit | Full attachment set | 908474-28 |
The stretch hose (908474-28) is the same across all DC14 variants. Belts, filters, and the clutch assembly are also shared with the DC07 in most cases, which means parts are easier to source than on newer models.
DC14 Filters
The DC14 has two filters. Both should be checked when suction drops.
Pre-motor filter (washable)
Located inside the cyclone assembly at the top of the machine. Remove, tap out loose dust, rinse under cold water, and leave to dry for at least 24 hours before refitting. Never refit a wet filter. It damages the motor. If washing no longer restores suction, replace it.
Post-motor HEPA filter: part 901420-02
Located behind the motor, usually accessible from the back of the machine. This is a non-washable filter on most DC14 models. Replace annually, or when you notice a dusty smell coming from the exhaust. The 901420-02 is a generic-compatible HEPA that fits DC07, DC14, and DC15.
DC14 Hose
The stretch hose (part 908474-28) is the most commonly replaced DC14 part. It runs from the base of the machine up to the wand connector. Failure points are the two ends: the plastic connectors crack with age and repeated twisting. Signs of a failing hose: suction at the cleaner head is strong but suction at the wand end is weak, or you can feel air escaping near a connector.
The internal hose (part 904219-02, shared with DC07) connects the base unit to the stretch hose inlet. This fails less often but is worth checking if replacing the stretch hose does not fix the suction loss.
DC14 Belts
The DC14 uses a two-belt clutch system: one belt runs from the motor to the clutch, a second from the clutch to the brushroll. Both are included in the DC14 belt pack (part 902514-01, 2-pack).
Signs a belt needs replacing: the brushroll is not spinning, there is a burning rubber smell during use, or you can see the belt is cracked or slack when you remove the soleplate. The DC14 also has a belt-changing tool (sold separately) that makes the job much easier: the clutch mechanism is under spring tension and the tool holds it open while you fit the new belt.
Clutch assembly: part 900252-04
If both belts are intact but the brushroll still does not spin, the clutch assembly itself may have failed. The clutch disengages the brushroll when the handle is upright (to protect hard floors) and re-engages when tilted for carpet. A failed clutch either sticks in the disengaged position or loses the ability to re-engage. Replacement clutch assemblies (DY-90025204) are available and the job takes around 20 minutes with basic tools.
DC14 Brushroll
The DC14 brushroll (part 904174-01, shared with DC07 clutch models) sits in the soleplate and is held by two end caps. Symptoms of a worn brushroll: bristles are splayed flat and no longer agitate carpet effectively, hair is wrapped so tightly around the roll it cannot be cleared, or there is a ticking noise from the head during use.
Removing and refitting the DC14 brushroll requires no tools: the end caps unclip by hand. It is one of the easier maintenance jobs on the machine.
DC14 On/Off Switch: part 901181-01
The rocker switch on the DC14 handle fails on older machines, usually because the plastic housing cracks. Replacement switches (901181-01) are compatible with DC07, DC14, DC17, DC18, and several other models. The switch clips into the handle and the wiring connection is a simple spade connector: no soldering required.
