This looks like the part I need, but I am cannot see how to remove the rotating part that is still attached to the receiver in the vacuum body. Help!

Thats pretty much it. Is there any debris around the hose end which is holding it inside?

Right. I pinch the side tabs and they are definitely disengaged (I can just pull them out of the ring), but the inside tube does not release. It turns freely, but does not lift out. Is there another catch somewhere?

You would need to pinch the side tabs to remove it.
